What exactly are the components of a healthy life?

We live in an age in which we are privileged to have medical research at the tip of our fingers.  It only takes moments to google the information to find out what the components of a healthy life are.  We are not called the “information age” for nothing.  Having access to information leads us to another more important question.   Is the medical research we receive accurate in content?

I have been around a while, I will not state my age.    In the course of my lifetime, many of the components of a healthy lifestyle have been revised so many times I am no longer able to keep track.  The simple fact is most people would choose a healthy lifestyle if they could only figure out what one is.

I highly respect Doctors of Medicine.  However, I do have a lot to say on the subject from my personal experience and as a Wellness Advocate, and from what the Bible has to say on this subject.  Yes, you heard me right.   I get much of my information about what I believe and don’t believe in the Bible.

When evaluating the current information

available about health.

I ask myself one question.

“What Does The Bible Have To Say About That?

The Bible like God never changes.  The things that were true of humanity in Biblical times is still true of humanity today.  I read the Bible through the lens of God’s love for me.  He made laws because His love for each one of us is great.  He has a lot to say in the Levitical laws about healthy living.  For the record, I am not talking about Kosher laws.  I don’t believe that if you have a piece of bacon you are unclean or that you are going to hell.  I do believe that God’s laws are true and want to examine each one in a spirit of understanding to better comprehend God’s redemptive plan for my life.  One application of my beliefs is that I rarely eat pork.  This is just one example.

CHALLENGE YOU  to check out what the Bible has to say on the subject of health.  We find out through Scripture in Mark 12:30 that we have different components of our life..heart, soul, mind, and strength.  We must maintain each one of these areas of our life in order to remain healthy.  God is the great healer and has promised us that if we obey his commands one of the benefits is good health (Exodus 15:26).  God views a healthy body not just in terms of the physical body but rather the whole of a person. The Bible is very clear that we are to take good care of our bodies (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) and that our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit.  There are many verses that speak of using “medical treatments” such as applying bandages (Isaiah 1:6), oil (James 5:14), oil and wine (Luke 10:34), leaves (Ezekiel 47:12), wine (1 Timothy 5:23), and salves, (Jeremiah 8:22). Many of these treatments would be considered holistic today.

I believe that the Bible’s view of medicine, healing, and health is more holistic than the way we view health in the United States.

Components of a Healthy Life

Components of a Healthy Life

  • Feed your mind with wholesome knowledge
  • Exercise
  • Obey God’s commands
  • Eat healthy food (Find out what the Bible says diet is in the book What the Bible Says About Healthy Living.)
  • Spend time with God in prayer and reading His Word.
  • Live in peace with others
  • Practice Self-Care, you are God’s creation
  • Rest

How do those principles transform our daily lives?

Here is how I have put those principles into practice.

  • I eat a Mediterranean Diet.
  • I maintain healthy, forgiving relationships.
  • I see an M.D, Chiropractor, and Integrative D.O. and a Naturopath.
  • I use essential oils and herbs and take my prescription medication.
  • I maintain a daily time of prayer and contemplation with God on a daily basis.
  • I read frequently and enjoy learning.  I make sure I am evaluating what I read through a Biblical Worldview.
  • I walk on a daily basis…well, on an almost daily basis. 🙂
  • I practice Christ-Centered Slow Living.
  • Go to my M.D. for a yearly checkup.
  • I laugh a lot!

Implementing these elements of a healthy life has been a process.  Pick one thing and slowly and deliberately with prayer make the changes needed to make the needed change happen.

YOUR TURN…

What changes do you need to make?
