Yes, you heard right! Today, I am going to teach you how to save loads of money using one small container of Rit Dye.

I get my Rit Dye on Amazon because it is the least expensive in my area.  It is available at many other stores like Hobby Lobby, Joann Fabrics, and often your local grocery store.  I use one box or 1/4 of a bottle per laundry load of clothes.

How do I save the most money? It is by using the Rit Dye to refresh our clothes.  I use black, navy blue, and brown dye the most.  I hate how dark colors fade!  With one bottle of dye, I can make a load of black clothing look like new for very little money!  Rit dye comes in a rainbow of colors too. Try it on your jeans too!

BlackLiquid

I usually dye black clothing two times a  year.  With this practice alone over the past 20 years, I have saved literally thousands of dollars!  Instead of having to replace faded clothing with new clothes, I just dye them to make them look new. For example, my daughter’s dance company has black leggings, capris, leotards, ballet sweaters, ballet skirts, and staff shirts.  These fade so quickly and look old and ratty in just a few months of use.  I just dye the black dance clothing and Voila!  They look new.  I rarely have to purchase anything new this way! (Now, a shameless plug for my daughter’s dance studio Leap of Faith Dance Company.  It is a ministry dedicated to teaching others about worshiping God through dance.  What a blessing it has been!)

I have used Rit Dye to save money by dying different shades of the same color to match.  For example.  I wear a lot of the color navy blue.  If I purchased a blue sweater and a pair of blue pants at the thrift store but each piece is just a bit different shades of blue. I take them home and throw them in the washer with the dye and Voila!  I have a new outfit for a pittance and it looks like they were made to go together.

Another way I have used Rit Dye to save money is on home decorating projects.  I purchased roman blinds from IKEA a few years ago for my son’s room.  They only came in white but I needed the blinds in navy blue.  The price at IKEA was the right price, though.  So, I purchased the blinds and put them in a large container to soak and dyed them navy blue.  They are still looking good!

Currently, my favorite way to use Rit Dye is to dye my stained washcloths and to dye all my white towels charcoal grey!  The towels and napkins are still in excellent condition but one had stains and the other one was a decorating preference.  I am sure I saved big not having to purchase new towels and washcloths!

YOUR TURN…

How have you used Rit Dye to save money?

  1. what a fascinating idea! Why did I never think of that?? I have black clothes that have faded out and I hate having to replace them.

    1. Hi Hannah,
I am so happy you found the post helpful! Thanks for taking the time to comment!

  2. Hello!
I’m having a sleepless night and just happened to bump into your blog. What a GREAT idea with the dye. I do have a question, if you or anyone have the answer. I have two beautiful roman shades from a home I moved from and brought them with me,,(along with way too much stuff that should have been purged or donated). The shades are a dusty mauve color. (you heard me right)! They’d been around awhile and still in perfect shape and a common design. I HAD to bring them! Do you know if they can be dyed as well? (I realize it’s going to need to be darker but is it worth my time?? Thanks so much. I enjoyed your info on dying blacks. That will definitely happen here.

    Thanks and take care,

    Nancy

    1. Hi Nancy,
I applaud your thriftiness! I do think they can be dyed. Natural fibers dye the easiest but I have dyed every type of fabric. Depending on the blinds width, I think the hardest thing will be finding a container to do the dying in. When dying my blinds I used a large aluminum wash bin. (I now have flowers planted in it:) ) Keep me posted and thanks for stopping by!

  3. Thanks for the tip!
