Today, I am excited to share my tried and true, Organic Ways To Have Amazing Roses. My garden is totally organic. Why? I can grow flowers, vegetables, and fruit with excellence without the use of chemicals. I do not want pesticides anywhere near my home. It is that simple for me.
The roses are absolutely stunning this year at The Peaceful Haven! I was so overtaken by their beauty this morning, that I asked my daughter to photograph one of the roses in our yard that has gone “gangbusters”! I have been training this particular rose to climb up the front railing and onto the house. It has taken about 5 years to get this far. The rose you see is an heirloom called Zephirine Drouhin.
“What’s in a name?
That which we call a rose,
by any other name would smell as sweet. “
– William Shakespeare
1. Pick the right rose. As you can see, I live in a 1903 farmhouse so I tend to gravitate toward old-fashioned roses. The setting of your home will determine what kind of roses you pick. Another tip…You will not have success with roses if you don’t get them from a reputable source. I pick heirloom roses for their hardiness and for the simple fact that they are very easy to grow. I have also always had success growing roses from David Austin. His ability to breed roses is a gift to all of us. His roses have a romantic quality that draws any person “to stop and smell the roses”!

2. Fertilize with composted manure. This is easy. I have chickens so I also use composted chicken manure to fertilize, however, I usually purchase a bag of Composted Cow Manure and dump one 25 pound bag on each rose bush in my yard. Easy, Easy, Easy! I apply the composted manure in the Autumn. Check out The Beginners Guide to Composting for more information on fertilizing your plants.
3. Roses love Epsom Salts. You can put one cup of Epsom Salts into a gallon of water to make “Epsom Salt Tea” for your roses. I water my roses with the Epsom Salt Tea once a month. Epsom Salts contain magnesium which helps plants absorb phosphorus and nitrogen. It also encourages leaf and flower growth! Here is a tip: When planting a new rose bush sprinkle a handful of Epsom Salts in the hole before planting the rose.
Happy Gardening and watch out for those thorns!
