As a stay-at-home Mom, I have sometimes found it hard to fulfill my mandate to care for the poor. Our culture of individualism has not made it easy to connect with others or even to know if one’s neighbor is suffering.   I have had to come up with creative ways to help the poor from home.   Just because you are a busy Mom and your ministry is to your husband, children, and home we still must give a concentrated effort to serve the poor.

She opens her hand to the poor

and reaches out her hands to the needy.

Proverbs 31:20

I love the ingenuity and creativity of the Proverbs 31 woman.  Don’t you?  I have made it my mission over the past 27 years of marriage to become like her.  Now, I still have a long way to go!   I am so glad that she was concerned with the poor in her community and was known to show compassion to those in need.

Here are some ways that I have served the poor as a homemaker…

10 Ways to Help the Poor from Home

  1. Tithe 10 percent of your grocery budget, purchase food, and donate to your local food pantry every time you grocery shop.
  2. Sponsor a child from Compassion International or  World Vision.
  3. Carry Wendy’s or McDonald’s gift certificates in your car and give them out to the needy you encounter.
  4. Tutor a needy child in your own home for free.
  5. Make “necessity packs” for the homeless.
  6. Financially or through prayer, support a missionary.
  7. Collect blankets for The Sleeping Bag Project, an organization that makes sleeping bags for the homeless.
  8. Have a garage sale and donate the proceeds to a ministry that serves the poor in your area.
  9. Disciple a spiritually poor woman.
  10. Donate your clothes and coats to a church that provides clothes to the poor.

YOUR TURN…

How are you helping the poor from your home?
