Confession time, I am not a naturally organized person.  I have had to learn how to organize my LARGE family.  My brain rejects just the thought of a schedule let alone the thought of organization!  There are some qualities that I relish more than my strong dislike of the mundane that is PEACE, BEAUTY, and CALM.  I have come up with some helpful tools that I am excited to share with you in 5 Ways To Organize Your LARGE Family.

I can promise you this

you will not have any peace or calm in your life

if you don’t start

implementing some organization principles

in your home.

I  have a vision for how I want my children to live and how our family operates.  This takes a little forethought to pull off and also knowing yourself and how you function is helpful!  For example, because I am a bit of a free spirit I never use times on my daily schedule.  It is a loose list of daily events.  The way I organize my home and family must “look good” and be simple for it to work.

5 Ways to Organize Your LARGE Family

  • Calendar  (Schedule) Start by color coating each family member.  I use a large paper calendar posted on the side of my refrigerator using magnetic C-cup hooks.  Because I have older children, everyone who lives at home needs to put their schedule on the calendar in their color.  If it is not on that calendar then it does not happen.
  • Cubbies/Lockers  (Things)  We have what we call cubbies which are really lockers for each one of our children in our mudroom.  They keep their coats and shoes in the large bottom portion and all their school books and supplies in the top portion.
  • Chores  (Homekeeping) Schedule out dishes, laundry, mowing the lawn, etc. so that everyone can pitch in and help.  Using a chore chart helps keep it all in one location!
  • Clear Plastic Bins  (Clothes) I store all outgrown clothes in clear plastic bins, which are great because you can see what is in them at a glance!  I also sort the size and season.  For example, size 3T winter would be one bin.  If you have more than will fit in a bin, pick your favorites and give the rest away.  For daily clothes organization of younger children, I would roll outfits and set the rolls in their dresser drawers.  A roll would include a bottom and a top with girl accessories if needed like tights or hair ribbons.  Then all that is needed is for the child to pull out the roll and get dressed.
  • Bookshelves  (Toys and Books) I store all toys and books on bookshelves.  Toys are in baskets, only a few at a time making it into a toy box.  I rotate the toys as well.  I find that I LOVE using baskets because you can use the dump and go clean up method!
