Discipleship is a lifelong passion of mine however, it could be that my interest is because I am the mother of six children. The great commission is often misunderstood, thankfully we are going to gain clarity today on the “how and why” of sharing the gospel. I am excited to share with you 5 Ways To Engage Kids In Daily Discipleship plus a GIVEAWAY!
Let’s start with the basics. If you are a parent then your job is to make dedicated disciples of your children. This is the great commission in action and the foundation is love. In today’s church culture, the most forgotten in terms of evangelism are our very own children. Being fruitful and multiplying is one of the best ways to pass on the faith also it is a most natural and delightful process!
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.
And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.
Matthew 28:19-20
5 Ways To Engage Kids In Daily Discipleship
- Don’t you just love how practical the Bible is? Deuteronomy 11:19 is basically, a simple description of how daily discipleship should look. You shall teach them (the commandments of God) to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. This is a lovely description of Christ-centered slow living in action, making space for God. Talk about and with Jesus, spend time with Jesus, and laugh with Jesus and your children.
- Family Devotions are a consistent part of our daily lives. Sometimes, we read a Christian biography and talk about it. Sometimes fiction books with Christian principles like the Chronicles of Narnia Series, and other times a book written specifically for the daily discipleship of kids. I have the privilege of reviewing many many books. Last month I stumbled across this gem, God’s Words For Families Devotional! This amazing book contains 365 Devotional Activities for families!
- The term, acts of service seem so organized and daunting. I would like to reframe this for you. Service can easily be incorporated into your daily home life and even as you are traveling around town. Start with a smile and teach your child that just smiling at someone can serve and bless. Bring a grocery cart back into the store, say thank you to members of your family and friends, pick a bouquet of flowers and bring it to your neighbor (dandelions are just fine) and finally make sure to include your children as you serve at church.
- Special Times are something that my husband and I invented, as far as I am aware. We set aside one night a week for each child. We let them pick whatever they want to do. Basically fun time with Mom and Dad, however, it always naturally seems to turn into spiritual questions at the end.
- Homeschool your children. Educating your children at home is not just about reading, writing, and arithmetic. Discipleship is about relationships and homeschooling gives you the time to invest in your children. It takes time to build a relationship between Jesus and your child and a relationship between you and your child. Relationships must always be based on love, redemption, and respect.
