I may as well confess, that rising early has been a challenge for me. Judging from the correspondence I receive, it is a hard thing to accomplish for many women, especially mothers. So stay tuned for 6 Secrets To Rising Early!
I love that the Bible has many examples of women who are growing into the woman God has called them to be. They are in process. They are not perfect however, all display a desire to serve and love God. Each woman in the Bible can teach us so many beautiful things about ourselves and how the world works. Today let’s take a look at the Proverbs 31 Woman.
I adore the Proverbs 31 Woman, I just wish she had a name, like Julia or something. If she had an actual name like Hannah or Miriam or Phoebe she would be more real and not so mythical. Neither here nor there, she is a model of Biblical Womanhood that we should study, yes, even Proverbs 31:15 “She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household and portions for her maidens”.
While we are discussing rising early let us add to this topic the Spiritual Discipline of Silence. Combining the command in Proverbs with the Christian practice of solitude strengthens the argument for becoming an early riser. Killing two birds with one stone so to speak.
6 Secrets To Rising Early
- Examine your situation. Are you unable to get up early because you stay up too late or did you just have a newborn? Do you have a health concern or are you struggling with laziness or lack of motivation? Are you feeling depressed and not getting the rest you need to be healthy? Before reading #3 take some time to pray, read your Bible, and listen to what God has to say on the matter. Take as long as you need to discover the truth of your situation. Remember rest is a Biblical command.
- It is important to understand how God created us. My morning wake-ups became much easier when I learned about Circadian rhythms. Circadian rhythms are physical, mental, and behavioral changes that follow a 24-hour cycle. These natural processes respond primarily to light and dark and have a huge effect on sleep.
- As it says in Proverbs 29:18, Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he. Embracing the beauty and benefits of rising early is a profound motivator. It’s most difficult to successfully embrace a new habit when you have not fully understood the reason behind the task. Simply put, rising early makes your life better and easier. Spending time with Jesus and His Word is the best way to start your day.
- Having trouble with the physical aspect of getting up? Set an alarm clock 5 minutes early every day until you get to your desired wake-up time. Put your alarm across the room or how about trying a circadian rhythm alarm clock?
- Have an evening routine. Set out your clothes the night before, put lavender essential oil in a diffuser, take a shower, brush your teeth, and remember absolutely no electronic devices after 8 pm. These practices set you up for a good night’s sleep and will help you wake up knowing that you did your best to give your body what it needs.
- Start your mornings by creating a cozy morning space. Light a candle, pour yourself a cup of tea or coffee. Grab a soft blanket and your Bible. Now, doesn’t that sound delightful? We all need quiet and silence even if you are an extrovert. Spending time alone can have a powerful effect on our health.
I rise before dawn and cry for help:
I wait for Your words.
Psalm 119:147
YOUR TURN…
What’s your biggest struggle getting up early?
