5 FREE Curb Appeal Tips To Try Right Now…I’ve been frustrated by all the tips on how to make your home have curb appeal. Why?  Because everything the experts suggest costs a ton of money!  However, our homes are important, and keeping our houses looking neat and clean can only foster good neighbor relationships as well as increase the value of our home.

Susan Clayton, an environmental psychologist at the College of Wooster, says that for many people, their home is part of their self-definition, which is why we do things like decorate our houses and take care of our lawns. These large patches of vegetation serve little real purpose, but they are part of a public face people put on, displaying their home as an extension of themselves.

5 FREE Curb Appeal Tips To Try Right Now

WEED

You know how when you are driving around town and you notice all the weeds growing in the sidewalk cracks, the cracks in the road, or in the gutters?  OK, maybe I am the only one that does that but addressing the weeds growing in and around your home will make a big difference to your home’s curb appeal.  Go outside with a pad and paper and stand back, take a good hard look at the weeds.  Check out the sidewalk and road in front of your home, your foundation, the cracks in your driveway, gutters, and yes, your garden beds.

TRIM SHRUBS

You don’t need a fancy hedge trimmer to trim your bushes you can use a small hand pruner.  If you have an electric hedge trimmer then, by all means, use it but it is not necessary when clipping your bushes.  I like to have rounded shrubs, the contrast between the squareness of the house and the round shrubs is pleasing to the eye.   Start off by cutting your shrubs into squares and then round the corners.

PAINT

Use leftover paint to touch up the house trim and front door.  Painting the front door a complementary color or the classic black is a great way to add curb appeal for FREE.  Have several paint cans but not the exact colors you want for the front door.  Try your hand at mixing a custom color.  If your willing to spend a few dollars, head to the Oops Paint section at your local paint store.

CLEAN

The easiest way to do this is by using a power washer.  If you don’t own one ask around to see if a family member or neighbor will let you borrow one for the day.  This is a refreshing task and the transformation of your home after all the dirt is removed is thrilling!  Try it on your deck and porches too.  Total cost = FREE

EDGE

Edging your flower borders and grass makes a big difference and makes everything look well cared for and tidy.  I have had on my wish list for a long time a gasoline-powered edger, but for the last twenty years of home ownership, I have used a straight-edged spade to edge everything.  Bonus, getting LOTS of exercise!
