Homemaking is such a fun occupation and I have to confess that I love the challenge of budgeting. In my ongoing quest to save money, I bring you 21 Ways To Save Money In The Laundry Room.
I am excited to share this post with you as I think it contains some ideas that you won’t see in other “SAVE MONEY” posts on the internet. One of the things that discourage me from learning to be frugal is the lack of new ideas. It is my sincere hope that you will find some new inspiration to help you save your family even more money!
21 Ways To Save Money In The Laundry Room
1. Make your own laundry detergent Check out my recipe!
2. When you run out of laundry detergent substitute 1 TBS. liquid dishwashing detergent.
3. If you run out of laundry detergent and don’t have liquid dish soap use 1/4 cup baking soda.
4. Don’t use your dryer. I have both outside and inside cloths lines, that way I can hang up clothes to dry year-round. THIS WILL SAVE YOU THE MOST MONEY!
5. Wash in cold water when you can.
6. Make your own stain spray. I add OnGuard cleaning concentrate to water and put in a spray bottle for homemade stain spray.
7. Don’t use dryer sheets make your own DIY dryer sheets from old wool sweaters and pure essential oils.
8. Unplug your washer and dryer when you are not using them.
9. If you have a window in your laundry room don’t turn on the light while doing laundry.
10. Use a stain chart to make removing stains easier, using natural ingredients will save you money and I have found more effective than a stain stick. I use this chart.
11. If you use store-bought laundry detergent and stain sticks, make sure you use coupons. To maximize your coupons use them on SALE items. I make homemade laundry detergent.
12. If you are doing a small load of laundry set the washing machines water levels accordingly or better yet make sure you only wash when you have a full load.
13. Use a water heater timer and do laundry only when you have hot water or wash in cold water.
14. I have found that most clothes that say “dry clean” on them do well washing on the gentle cycle making sure to hang dry the clothes. This saves a lot of money at the dry cleaners!
15. To make your clothes last longer, use Rit Dye to refresh your clothes. Check out my post on how I save lots of money using Rit Dye!
16. Make sure you have an energy-efficient washer and dryer. Sometimes you have to spend money to save money.
17. Wear your clothes twice if they have no visible stains and do not smell 🙂
18. Use your bath towel for the whole week. This saves money on laundry! (I have to admit that some in my family are faithful in this and some use a fresh towel with every shower, we are still working on this one).
19. Clean your dryer lint trap every time you dry your clothes.
20. Dare I say it, own fewer clothes.
21. Keep dryer heat inside to warm your home in the winter. Install a Heat Keeper.

I do a lot of those same things. I almost never dry a whole load — the only exception is towels because I do like soft towels. I have been using dryer balls for a couple years and I love them (but so does the dog!). I usually make my own detergent, but recently found Nellie’s and use 1 tablespoon of detergent. I keep smelling the clothes because I am in disbelief, but 1 T. works. Sometimes when the clothes are really smelly (LoF) I add a couple T. baking soda to the wash cycle and a little white vinegar to the rinse cycle.
I recently discovered woolite dry cleaner cloths and now I don’t dry clean anything. You just toss the cloth and the clothes in the dryer for 20 minutes. If they have spots (the clothes) you rub the spot with the cloth before drying. So far, so good. There are still chemicals involved but they couldn’t be worse than the dry cleaners, could they? And so much less expensive (just watch where you buy them — not amazon!). I also hand wash a lot of articles that claim “dry clean only.”
I keep a bar of Fels Naptha on the washer and when I find a stain, I wet the bar and rub. It almost always comes out — for about $1.50 a bar that lasts forever. For grease stains — a drop of Dawn dish soap.
Thanks for all the tips!
Hi Barbara,
Thank you for all the additional tips! I have never tried Fels Naptha but have heard about it for years! Do you get it online or at the grocery store? I think that would be easier than homemade stain stick and if it works …Easy is always better 🙂
I get it a Kroger because it’s the only local store that carries it, though I buy very little at Kroger.
I have looked all over for it but did not try Kroger…heading there ASAP! Thank you so much for your help Barbara and for your knowledge! You are such a blessing to me!!
Great ideas! What kind of container do you suggest for storing the laundry detergent? And I’m fairly certain you can buy fels naptha soap at the grocery store. If you can’t find it let me know and you can have half of mine! What do you use for dirty shirt collars?
Hi Kim…I use stain stick for dirty shirt collars. But I think I would like to try Fels Naptha. I keep my laundry detergent in a old GIANT Pickle Jar! Thanks for your comment!!
For my husband’s collars (though he’s a white collar man, he makes a dirty collar!) I use a quick squirt of resolve or shout and then rub it with the fels naptha. So far, it’s the only combo that works, and it’s the only thing I use stain spray on.
That is good to know!
Great tips! I definitely don’t do enough of these.
I am so pleased it was helpful! Thanks for stopping by!
Frugal is trendy now! Thank you for the great ideas!
LOL, I LOVE it!
