Good, Simple Short Christian Book Reviews are hard to find. They are even harder to find for the discerning woman. I am a researcher, so I like to read reviews from a Christian Worldview before I spend the time reading a book. It is just plain helpful. Each month at The Peaceful Haven I review the best books I have read that month. I look at each book through a variety of lenses but the most important one is what the Bible has to say about the topic. Does the book being reviewed encourage that view?
To say I love to read would be an understatement. I desire to help others pick encouraging books and in so doing, motivate others in the JOY of reading. The subjects of the books I review reflect topics that directly affect me. I am Michael’s grateful wife, homeschooling mother of six children, and author of the book Chosen: One Family’s Journey With Autism. I also am a homemaker and lover of fiction so you will see books that directly affect a woman’s life, reviewed.
Have FUN reading this month!

SPIRITUAL
Putting God First: How to Make God the #1 Priority in Every Area of Your Life is a wonderfully simple book encouraging you to put God first. It is written in a user-friendly way and addresses real-life issues and how to overcome obstacles that may get in your way of spending time with God daily. FICTION
Are you looking for a good book that will calm your nerves, slow your mind down, and help you to enjoy the little things in life? Then this series is for you. Written from the perspective of Miss Read, the village schoolmarm living in the British countryside town of Fairacre in the 1950s. I laughed my way through the first four books of the series, there are 20 charming books!
*There are two words, in the first four books that I found offensive. One is about people of color and one is about children with special needs. Regrettably, they reflect the time the book was set in. If you are using these books as a read-aloud, I highly recommend a healthy biblical discussion about the use of disparaging vocabulary.

Village Diary (The Fairacre Series #2)

HEALTH
Reading Heal Local: 20 Essential Herbs for Do-it-Yourself Home Healthcare was an education for me. I found myself looking around my yard and neighborhood for plants that grow wild to be used as vitamin supplements and herbal medicine. I appreciated Dawn’s view of the importance of all kinds of medicine and when it is appropriate to use each one of them. Best of all… she is from Ohio!

INTERIOR DESIGN
Barbara Westbrook’s book Gracious Rooms blew me away! Does anyone else read the so-called “Coffee Table” books from cover to cover? This book inspired me in the art of loveliness. The use of God’s elements in a home such as light and nature and how those things bless daily living was new to me. Take a minute or a day to read through this beauty.

FINANCIAL
The Ten Commandments of Financial Happiness: Feel Richer with What You’ve Got is a great book, chocked full of quizzes that help you truthfully evaluate how you relate to money and why you do the things you do. Take the quizzes with your spouse and have fun discussing your answers. I have read and re-read many books about personal finance however, never one that helped me understand myself and my views about money.

HOMESCHOOL
Recovering the Lost Tools of Learning: An Approach to Distinctively Christian Education helped me to see Christian Education in a new light. I will apply what I learned with my two children left in our homeschool. I wondered why I had not found this book earlier in my homeschooling career. This book contains valuable information and is a must-read for anyone interested in a superior education for their children. This is not just for the homeschooler but for every parent.

I have to be honest, at my first read of
All the colors displayed in this world that God made—
every glorious, fabulous, beautiful shade—
show how good God is and will always be.
But what is the color of love? Come and see!
