Have you ever wondered how to make Christmas more meaningful? How to have a Christ-Centered Christmas? Here is some help, 5 Ways To Have A Christ-Centered Christmas!
I have, and let’s face it in today’s culture it is really hard! From the moment Thanksgiving is over, we are plagued with distractions that take us away from the real meaning of Christmas. If we want to have a Christmas that is devoted to worshiping the Son of God then we are going to have to fight for it. Who is with me?
As a mother of six children, most of whom are now adults I have formulated a few tips that have helped my family celebrate Christmas with our focus on Jesus Christ. It is, after all, His Birthday that we celebrate.
5 Ways To Have A Christ-Centered Christmas
Get Rid of Santa
Ok, I know this is my most controversial principle so I may as well get it out of the way first. For the record, I love the story of Santa; we know and enjoy the story in our family! We watch The Polar Express every year and even love Rudolph! Our family treasures the story of Kris Kringle and learning about the true story of Saint Nicholas but we DON’T do these things at Christmas. We look at Santa as an American folk tale that is an absolutely wonderful story. The kids like to do this after the Christmas Season for Wintertime fun. Let’s eliminate anything that is in competition with Jesus.
Celebrate the Season of Advent
The church we attend does not celebrate the Advent Season corporately but we do as a family. Celebrating Advent keeps the focus on Christ. Every day is a countdown and brings us closer to the birth of Christ! Pick a devotional, Advent Wreath, and Advent Calendar to add meaning to the Christmas Season.
Make the Nativity the Focal Point
We have many Nativity Scenes or as some refer to Creches decorating the inside of our home and I have been saving my pennies for many years for an outdoor one. When my children were young they enjoyed hours of fun playing with the Nativity. Reenacting the Biblical account of the Birth of our Savior. Now, they love to set them up and we have one in almost every room of our home. Some are from different places around the world. If your set is breakable, why not purchase a nativity just for the kids? I recommend a set made from olive wood which is very sturdy or the Fischer Price Nativity which will last forever.
Make Jesus a Birthday Cake
I love this tradition! Get the kids involved with baking and decorating. Put candles on and sing Happy Birthday to Jesus on Christmas. This can be a plate of brownies or even a pizza pie! Get creative…
Give Jesus a Gift
Every year we have a present under the Christmas tree addressed to Jesus. This wrapped box is filled with all the note cards we have written on over the years. Each year we write on a card that we plan to give Jesus for Christmas. If a child can’t write then we help them write it down or ask them to draw a picture. I now have over 26 years of these cards in the box under our tree. We all enjoy looking through and reading our gifts to Jesus from the previous years. This box is an absolute treasure to me!
CHALLENGE
Take a critical look at your Christmas traditions. Pray about which ones to keep and which ones to get rid of. Make Christ the center of your Christmas this year!

Hei, good ideas! I very much like the giving a gift to Jesus idea and I’ll be starting that tradition this year with my little ones.
I am so thankful you found the post helpful Marya!
I really love the idea of giving a present to Jesus! Do you mind sharing any of your notes or favorite ideas for gifts for Jesus?
Hi Jamie,
I am so glad you liked the post! Over the years, the gifts to Jesus have ranged from “an angel” – at age 2 to read the Bible daily as a teenager. I hope this will help!
