I have personally been using a capsule wardrobe for over 10 years! The thing I like most about creating this type of organizational clothing system is that it simplifies everything about getting dressed. As a mom of six children, every area of my life that I can simplify makes a tangible difference in my stress levels. I am excited to share with you today how to Create A Beautiful Capsule Wardrobe In 3 Easy Steps!
The idea behind a capsule wardrobe is to pick either a monochromatic color scheme or a trio of colors that work together making getting dressed in the morning so much easier. Decision fatigue is a real thing! All your clothes and accessories should work cohesively together and be able to mix and match. You will be able to make at least fifty to one hundred different outfits out of a simple capsule wardrobe depending on the base number of clothing in your closet.

Create A Capsule Wardrobe In 3 Easy Steps
Step 1
Take all your clothes out of your closet and divide them into two piles. The first pile will be clothes you love and the second those you just like. Once you have done that, look at the pile of clothes you love and see if a color stands out. In my case, my capsule wardrobe includes three colors blue, green, and yellow gold with the base color being blue. These are the colors I love and that I look good in. Remove all the clothes that don’t match your chosen color scheme.
Step 2
You now should have a pile of clothes that you love and are interchangeable. It’s time to make sure you have the basics included in your “love” pile. Take into account your lifestyle when choosing clothing items. Are you a stay-at-home mom like me or a 9 to 5 gal? This will inform what you decide to keep or get rid of.
The basics include:
- everyday purse
- jeans
- tailored pants
- skirt
- camisole
- everyday dress
- button-down sweater or blazer
- classic t-shirt
- pullover sweater
- blouse
- patterned or striped long-sleeve shirt
- dress shoes
- boots
- sneakers
- sandals
- seasonal coat
These are just the basics. A capsule wardrobe includes more than these items but every person choosing clothes will at the very least need these items.
Step 3
There are various opinions about how many clothes should make up a capsule wardrobe. Some say 33 items per season others 44. I have 72 items total including shoes, handbags, and coats. This is for a year-round wardrobe that includes all four seasons. It’s time to get creative and this is the fun part! Make sample outfits and see what works and doesn’t and keep only what you love. You may need to invite a fashionista friend over to help with this part.
There are many benefits to an intentionally created wardrobe of clothes you love and feel good in. My favorite (besides the ease of getting ready in the morning) is that it saves a whole lot of money in the clothes budget and I look much more put together now than I ever did when I was spending more money on clothes. Having a capsule wardrobe reduces overwhelm and stress!
