Ok, ladies, you all know that I am passionate about homemaking.  I think it is the most wonderful career in the world, as well as the most impactful on our society as a whole.  Homemakers do have the opportunity to change the world for the better, every single day!  There are many elements of homemaking but my very favorite is interior design.  I am so excited to share with you today some very helpful, Creative Problem-Solving Home Decor Tips!

I live in an old 1903 farmhouse, so my style very much represents the feel and age of the house. It also reflects my vintage design style and our family’s values.  Don’t get stuck on my style, use these tips to solve your own home decor problems.

Creative Problem-Solving Home Decor Tips

Mix The Century

What I mean by this, is that you can thoughtfully combine different periods in your home.  A good rule of thumb when doing this is to make sure you have a century separating each home decor item.  For example, you could have recently purchased a modern couch, placed it with a beautiful antique Persian rug, and have a turn-of-the-century glass mirror placed together.

Use Wall Space

If you are feeling crowded or overwhelmed by your stuff, the first thing to do is purge, sort, and giveaway.  After that bit of organization, and you still don’t have a place for everything, take a look at your wall space.  You can install bookcases for storage or even make a decorative gallery wall to display your special items.  Another creative idea is to hang a beautiful carpet on large walls as artwork!

Use Color on the Floor

This tip is especially helpful if you have neutral decor.  Carpets are a great way to incorporate a bit of color into a room.

Experiment with Pattern and Texture

I personally have a soothing color scheme in my farmhouse.  I like to focus on little pops of texture and pattern.  I use gingham (buffalo check) throughout my home as a unifying theme.  I also make sure I have different textures sprinkled throughout as well, like a sheepskin throw, vintage willow baskets, and hand-knit creamy-colored blankets.

Display Collectibles Together

There is so much more visual appeal when you group your favorite collectibles in one unit.  Display them all on one table or in one cabinet!  This kind of display is more visually appealing and also diminishes a cluttered feel when you spread your collection throughout the house.  Another tip is to make sure your collection is curated to maintain a sense of balance in your display.

Look At The Whole Picture

Looking at how each room works in balance with the other rooms in your home will help you make color choices that work together and not against each other.  Go outside and take a look at the garden and yard to see how you can connect both spaces together to create a peaceful welcoming atmosphere.
