DIY Healthy Terracotta Pot Beeswax Candle…I love easy, don’t you?

Better yet, when you can combine ease and health I’m always in!  The fact is that you rarely hear those two words in the same sentence.  I suppose that is just one reason I am so excited about this DIY project!

You may have been hearing that candles are toxic and been wondering why?

The biggest issue with candles is toxic wax and, in the case of older candles, toxic wicks.

Look out for aromatherapy candles made of paraffin—a petroleum byproduct—which releases carcinogenic soot when burned. The soot can also cause respiratory problems and will aggravate the conditions of those who already have asthma, lung, or heart problems.

Besides endangering your health and that of your family, soot from paraffin wax can cause significant damage to the inside of your house, plus your computers, electrical appliances, and ductwork.

And if that weren’t enough, aromatherapy candles that are scented with synthetic oils release microscopic particles that can cause cancer and other health problems when inhaled.

Once upon a time, many scented candles on the market contained lead-core wicks. Fragrance oils soften the wax, so the manufacturers used led to make the wicks stand firm. – Green America

DIRECTIONS

  • In a slow cooker or old stainless steel pot, melt the wax on low heat.  **BE CAREFUL OF HOT WAX**

  • When the wax is done melting add your 100% pure essential oils.

  • When the wax is melted carefully pour the wax into the terracotta flower pot.  (This is an adult job. Please use caution around children.) The candle wick may float a little but don’t worry you can finish positioning it after to are done pouring the beeswax. I also found this cute little, galvanized pot at Ikea too and just couldn’t resist!

  • Center the candle wick and press it down to the bottom of the pot.  Tie the wick onto a pencil to keep the wick centered while the wax is cooling.
  • Once the wax is finished cooling and hard to the touch, trim the wick to about 1/2 inch.
