I believe I have tried every kind of jewelry cleaner out there…both commercial and homemade.  Both seem to be filled with chemicals and since I am ultra-sensitive I set out to find a better way.  Could I actually make a DIY jewelry cleaner that had the same chemical makeup, was non-allergic, green, and frugal?

I started by looking at the ingredients of both homemade and commercial jewelry cleaners.  Then I tried to find natural ingredients that would accomplish the same thing.

It turned out to be so SIMPLE, I actually laughed!  Only two ingredients, a Q-tip and an old soft bamboo toothbrush!

DIY Jewelry Cleaner

Ingredients

1 cup vinegar

1/2 cup baking soda

glass bowl

Q-tips

DIRECTIONS

  1. Put the baking soda and vinegar in a bowl.  The bowl should be medium in size as the two ingredients together form a chemical reaction and foam.
  2. Add your jewelry, gently stir with a wooden spoon, and let sit for 5 minutes.
  3. Dip a Q-tip in the vinegar and baking soda and rub any stubborn spots.  (I have never had to do this step, except when I had spray paint on my wedding rings and it came right off!)
  4. Rinse your jewelry with water and pat dry.

*I have only used this cleaner on platinum, gold, and silver jewelry.  I have not tried it on costume jewelry so proceed carefully.
