I have been struggling with dry skin my whole life.  It is uncomfortable and painful and I honestly have probably tried all the products on the market including prescriptions.  As I progressed in my journey to solve this problem, I changed my diet, addressed allergies, and tried making my own lotions.  Things began to improve!   No preservatives and organic ingredients were what made the difference.  This is my tried and true Homemade Chamomile and Lavender Hand Cream that is effective on really, really, dry, rough, hands!  I am so excited to share it with you today!

Here are a few ingredients, well twelve to be exact, to look out for in personal care products.

  • Formaldehyde, a known carcinogen.
  • Paraformaldehyde, a type of formaldehyde.
  • Methylene glycol, a type of formaldehyde.
  • Quaternium 15, which releases formaldehyde.
  • Mercury, which can damage the kidneys and nervous system.
  • Dibutyl and diethylhexyl phthalates, which disrupt hormones and damage the reproductive system.

An added benefit to making your own personal care items is that it saves you lots of money in the long run.  The initial investment is just that, an investment in your health and wallet.  Store your ingredients in a dark cool place if you want them to last.  You can also freeze these products to ensure freshness.  Another solution is to make a bulk batch of this recipe and give some away to family and friends.

DIRECTIONS

  1. Pour olive oil into a glass measuring cup.  Add 1 TBS chamomile flower.  Mix and crush flowers into the oil using a metal spoon. Let sit for at least 15 minutes but any time over this is fine.
  2. Strain the chamomile-infused oil through a cheesecloth to remove the flowers.
  3. Combine all the ingredients except the essential oils. Pour them into the top of a double boiler.  The bottom should be filled with 1 cup of water.  Bring the water to a gentle boil.
  4. Melt the oils together until they are completely dissolved.  Make sure to stir constantly with a metal spoon. Once melted, pour into your canning jars and assorted tins.
  5. Cool in the refrigerator.
  6. Once the cream is solidified you can use it immediately.
