The Bible is filled with verses about self-control and I may as well confess right now, I don’t really enjoy those verses very much.  Alas, I struggle with self-control and often feel discouraged and overwhelmed!  I put together these Hopeful Bible Verses About Self Control to encourage you, and to encourage me.

I am currently studying the book of Titus and what a lovely book it is!  It is a volume that is chocked full of life applications. This biblical book is a letter written by Paul, filled with instructions to Titus about how to appoint worthy elders to positions of responsibility, and preach sound doctrine.  Paul also encourages Titus to exemplify these character traits in his own life which are virtues that are expected of all Christians.

There is one other very important point about this whole self-control thing and it really captured my attention.  Jesus is a self-controlled individual.  I know, it seems obvious, right?  Well, admittedly I had completely zoned in on the external behavior instead of the whole reason for wanting self-control in the first place. I desire to be like Christ.  Jesus in his gentle way also reminded me that I am not capable of accomplishing this character trait in my life without Him.  I must pray and ask God to deposit self-control into my very character.

The Word of God is filled with hopeful expectations.  Listen to the beauty of Titus 2:3-5, Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.

May you be filled with hope and encouragement dear friend. Slow down and make time to study, meditate and memorize these Bible verses.  Soak the truth deep in your soul. Ask Jesus to instill the pleasing gift of self-control in your life.

What makes you feel hopeful?
