Have you ever wondered how to make a topiary? Well, I have, several years ago I became slightly obsessed with topiary, especially boxwood. I am thankful for that experience so I can share a much easier DIY project with you! This topiary is also FREE for me to make and with a little creative scrounging, it can be for you too.
This is a very easy tutorial, why not ask the kids to join you? Ivy topiaries are very simple to make, and look stunning as an accessory in any home decor and even someone who is challenged with plants can have success with this project.
How To Make A Topiary
Supply List
flower pot (had a few extras laying around in my garage)
dirt (dug mine from the compost bin)
metal coat hanger (took one from the closet)
ivy plant (dug a few starts from my yard)
Directions
- Gather all your supplies.
- Fill the flower pot up halfway, and place your ivy plant/plants into the pot. Fill the remainder of the planter up to the top with dirt. You need ivy with at least two long strands of ivy. I planted two separate ivy plants.
- Stretch your coat hanger into a circle shape. It does not have to be a perfect circle. Stick the coat hanger into the center of the flower pot.
- Wrap the ivy around the circular hanger. Tuck the ends of the ivy under the other strand of ivy.
Where to Find Supplies for FREE
Ask anyone in your neighborhood who has an overgrown ivy patch for starts. Use another plant that you have in your yard like vinca or a wild ivy that grows in your area. (Always ask permission before you take plants.) Ivy is very easy to grow.
Look for flower pots throughout the year at the curb on garbage day. I have found many charming flower pots that way. Also, you could ask any store if they have any that they are throwing out.
Use dirt from your compost bin or just dig some from a flower bed. Ivy does not need any type of specially mixed soil.
Have Fun!
Blessings,
Love this project, thank you!
