I have been making my own homemade perfume from essential oils for well over ten years! Today, I am so excited to share the process with you and I promise it is simple and easy and takes only a few minutes of your time. The results are pure loveliness! So, here’s how to make your own natural perfume. Oh, and did I mention, that you will save a ton of money and be healthier at the same time?
The reason I started making my own perfume is that my body couldn’t handle synthetic fragrances. When you see the word fragrance on anything, make sure to research the ingredients. A great place to start is on the EWG website. After a few searches, you will clearly see there is a better way.
A scent can be extremely powerful and can even evoke an emotional response. For example, if you’ve been using perfume for your whole life there is a connection to memories of that perfume. Understandably, it might be really hard to make a change. But nothing is worth your health. There are many beneficial life-giving uses of essential oils and a really good thing is that there are side benefits to using all of these wonderful oils. You can affect your emotional well-being with every application of your DIY perfume.
When making your own perfume, it helps to have a little information on base notes, middle notes, and top notes to aid in your creation of perfume. Fragrance notes are essentially the different scent layers that make up the perfume. These scents are split into three distinct and individual elements: top notes, middle (heart) notes, and base notes. Together, the top, middle, and base notes work together to create an intoxicating fragrance.
If you already have a fragrance that you use, you may want to check the ingredients listed and try to replicate those scents using essential oils. It’s a great place to start…

Hi I have a question. If I wanted to for example add two essential oils to the base, would I need to do 10 drops each? Or 10 in total so 5 drops each? Or is it totally up to myself?
It is totally up to how you would like it to smell. Enjoy!
Hey Janelle, thank you for the recipe. I want to try to create a similar smell to my favourite perfume that I owned. Online, I find that the perfume has 3 middle notes and 3 base notes. How would you recommend altering your recipe? Should I ‘divide’ the 5 / 10 drops between the 3 notes?
These are the notes:
– Top Note: Bergamot (so 5 drops)
– Heart Notes: Casablanca Lily, Ylang-Ylang and Orange Blossom (so 1-2 drops each?)
– Base Notes: Sandalwood, Tahitian Vanilla and Amber (so 3-4 drops each?)
Thanks in advance!
Hi Eden,
Yes, I would try this first. You can always add more of a top, middle or base notes as needed. I can’t wait to hear how it comes out!
