I have two old apple trees right out my kitchen window that we treasure. They provide us with fresh apples, applesauce, and delicious apple butter. I haven’t been making apple butter for a couple of years because of the large amounts of sugar in the recipe. I am so happy to announce that I figured out a way to make Old Fashioned Sugar-Free Apple Butter! The secret ingredient is Zevia Root Beer. If you haven’t heard of Zevia, I urge you to try it!

Old Fashioned Sugar-Free Apple Butter
Ingredients
1 1/2 quarts apple cider
8 apples cored, peeled, cut into quarters
2 (12 fl. oz.) cans Zevia Root Beer
1 tsp ground cloves
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. allspice
12 tsp. salt
DIRECTIONS
- Boil the apple cider uncovered until it boils. Boil for thirty minutes to reduce by half.
- Pile apples into the crockpot.
- Pour the hot apple cider into the crockpot set on low. Cook for 8 hours total.
- After four hours of cooking add the remaining ingredients and stir.
- Cook for four more hours.
- Mash the apples with an old-fashioned potato masher.
- Pour into canning jars leaving an inch at the top of the jar. Process in a hot water bath to can the apple butter or store in the refrigerator.
