What do people mean when they talk about self-care?  For the believer, is self-care biblical?

As a mother of six children, I have personally struggled with the practice of caring for oneself and have reaped the consequences of it.  I currently battle seven different autoimmune diseases.  Because of my atrocious past in caring for myself, I am now quite intentional about the practice.  Let my mistakes be a warning to you…make time for self-care!

There are three practical areas of self-care.   Mind, Body, and Soul.  We will organize all three parts of our bodies with prayer and from a Biblical Worldview. As a side note, I have found that Christian women have a much harder time addressing self-care because they confuse it with selfishness.  I know I sure did.

Self-care is simply this,

understanding the person God created you to be.

 Caring for His creation

with the sole purpose of equipping oneself

to glorify God and enjoy your relationship with Jesus,

so that you may serve Him forever.

Is Self Care Biblical?

TODAYS CHALLENGE  has three parts…

  • Identify your personality type.
  • Write down three or four things in each category of self-care that your mind, body, and soul needs.
  • Schedule these self-care tasks on your calendar.

Let’s talk about each of these three tasks.

Task number one is to identify your personality type.  I personally like the Myers-Briggs personality test. Finding out your personality type is just one tool to better understand yourself.  It will help you clearly see what you need to address in your self-care strategy. Remember there is only one of you and you were chosen to be God’s daughter!  Wow!  What a privilege!

Next, write down three or four needs under each category of self-care.  For example, my personal self-care strategy looks like this.  My personality type is ENFP.  My self-care needs will look similar to yours in some areas and totally different in others.

Soul

  • Daily quiet time with God, reading my Bible, and Praying.
  • Keep the Sabbath Holy and rest on Sundays.
  • Spend time with my husband for at least 15 minutes a day.
  • Have a special time with one of my children daily.

Mind

  • Read every day. (I LOVE to read!)
  • Write every other day.
  • Draw, paint, or garden weekly.
  • Have a coffee/talk date with a friend twice a month.

Body

  • Take my daily supplements.
  • Eat a whole foods/gluten-free diet.
  • Walk, garden, or do Holy Yoga three times a week.
  • Get 9 hours of sleep a night.
  • Get a yearly physical, mammogram, and OBGYN checkup.

Biblical womanhood = FREEDOM

not some list of things to do or become

Finally, organize your self-care needs on your calendar.  Schedule every single one of your mind, body, and soul needs.

YOUR TURN…

How do you organize your self-care?

Blessings,
