I am so excited to share with you Simple Short Christian Book Reviews this month! This month had me reading and writing many reviews but here are my top picks for the month. I hope you will enjoy these edifying choices!
Everyone has different opinions on what a good book is and isn’t…rightly so. Christian Book Reviews are slightly easier to write because you are not just giving your personal opinion but also examining whether or not the book is written from a Christian Worldview. Not all the books you see featured in The Peaceful Havens monthly book reviews are published by Christian publishers or even written by Christians, but will always approach a book review from a Biblical Worldview. If there is something objectionable in a book it will be noted.
FICTION
DEVOTIONAL
After previewing, Unwrapping the Names of Jesus my husband and I decided it would be a perfect family devotional this Advent season. This beautiful hardback can be used for individual or family worship and although it is marketed for use in the Christmas season would be appropriate for devotional use throughout the year. Suffice it to say I have greatly enjoyed learning more in-depth about the names of Jesus. Unwrapping the Names of Jesus is appropriate for all age levels and even has a list of personal or family activities based on the weekly theme. Well written and more importantly transformational!
SPIRITUAL
Be Still My Soul is a compilation of essays about pain written by giants of the Christian faith and edited by Nancy Guthrie. I found myself reading this meaty book while I was quite ill with Lupus this past month. It may seem conflicted to say a book about pain and suffering is beautiful but I find myself hard-pressed for another word. Be Still My Soul will be and to anyone who is sick, depressed, or grieving from the loss of a loved one. Why? Because when we are in the thick of suffering it is transformational to see that there is purpose in our pain.
BEAUTY
Staying Stylish is a beautiful book written by a lovely Christian woman Candace Cameron Bure. Although our family’s standards of modesty are different than hers I highly recommend going through this book with your daughters. The discussions you will engage in with your daughters will draw you closer together and you will have a ton of fun making wardrobes, shopping for makeup, and styling each other’s hair!
CHILDREN
The Boxcar Children is a pick from my children who are now grown and still have fond memories of these endearing stories of the four boxcar children. Detailed and dynamic mysteries that will engage even reluctant readers. A beautiful model for siblings loving and taking care of each other.
HOSPITALITY
What Can I Bring? Do you struggle to find the perfect dish to bring to potlucks, friends’ homes, or meals to bring to the sick or new mom? Look no more because Southern Living once again has your back for providing the absolute BEST tasting recipes around that are perfect for everything from impressing your in-laws to providing your lady’s Bible study with healthy and nutritious snacks. As far as delicious goes no one can beat Elizabeth Heiskell.
HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Natural Beauty Skin Care Purchasing natural organic skincare can be expensive and quite frankly who can afford that? This book is chocked full of healthy organic recipes for every skincare issue you may have! Recipes are easy and cost-effective.
HOME DECOR
Make Yourself at Home This is a new release, that is full of inspiration for your home. Written with the aim that you can have a gorgeous home using thrift store finds, your personality, and creativity, and that no home should look alike. I love this premise that our homes should be a reflection of who we are as a family and the values we reflect. A bonus to this graphically beautiful book is that it is loaded with questions, ideas, and projects!
HAPPY READING!
