Simple Short Christian Book Reviews
CHRIST-CENTERED SLOW LIVING
Now, I have not read all of John Mark Comber’s books just his last three however, I found them rock solid and scripturally accurate…biblically orthodox. When you cry while reading a book, especially a spiritual formation book you know you are onto a good thing. In this book, you will learn to live by what the first Christian disciples called a Rule of Life. The whole point of this beautiful lifestyle is to become like Jesus. You will find a simple set of practices that will cause you to slow us down and pursue transformation. Please make sure to soak in all the goodness provided while reading
HISTORICAL FICTION
This series is my first experience reading Julie Klassen and I have to announce that I am now a FAN! Let me just start off by saying that if you like Jane Austen then these books are for you. Well written and just as witty, you will find yourself with a smile on your face. Julie Klassen has written The Innkeeper of Ivy Hill and The Ladies of Ivy Cottage with tenderness as we get an inside look into the hearts of the main characters and what life was like for women in the 18th century. These women lead challenging lives but find encouragement to press on as a result of the relationships they have with each other and their growing faiths. Did I mention there is a little romance growing fresh and new in each book of the series?
HOMEMAKING
Simplify your home with Remodelista The Organized Home. Easy to read and understand and what’s really special is that they include only “must-haves” in this book. If you’re looking for a way to streamline the process of organizing your home, you will greatly appreciate this book Formatted with step-by-step instructions and beautiful photographs that give important visual cues to help you organize your home the easy way!
GARDEN
I have been wanting to learn how to dye fabric, yarn, thread, and ribbon using natural dyes forever. The Modern Natural Dyer took it a step further for me and combined the skill of dying with my love of the garden! Chocked full of plants, how-to tutorials, and plants to add to your garden. An added benefit for a visual learner like me is the photographs are simply stunning. A big thank you to Kristine Vejar for teaching me the age-old art of natural dyes and giving me some flower suggestions that I would have never thought of adding to my garden before!
SIMPLIFY
I have been hearing a lot about Joshua Becker author of The More Of Less! Did you know he is a former youth pastor? I really, really found this book to be profound in so many ways. The story Joshua crafts about how he became a minimalist spoke to my core beliefs about the value of family. If I may be so bold, I think this should be required reading for everyone living in the United States at this time in history. You don’t have to agree with everything Becker says for this book to apply to areas in each one of our lives.
BIBLE STUDY
Are you longing to experience God’s presence and protection? Lara Dingman has done it again in This I Know, a Bible study for women who are struggling to find a secure future in this uncertain time we are currently living in. Current events are consistently discouraging and our situations may be as well. Spend time with God in this rock-solid theological study on who God is and why He is trustworthy to hold our future. I am so thankful for this study and I pray you will be too!
CHILDREN
I have been contemplating and writing about children’s imaginations of late and found myself thinking about which books fostered imaginative play the most in my own children’s lives. Check out these three middle-grade readers or read aloud as a family! Your kids will engage in hours of screen-free activities just from reading these three books!
COOKBOOK
OK, I am not a newlywed, not even close! I have been married for 29 years but this lovely book by Martha Stewart is an encouragement to any woman no matter how many years she has been married. The Newlywed Kitchen is loaded with delicious recipes plus how to organize a kitchen, the tools you will need, and even tips for successful forays into hospitality.
