Winter seems to conjure up a deep yearning in people to snuggle up under soft warm blankets and read a good book. I must admit that I am thankful for the colder months which gives me more time to read. That said, I am so excited to share with you my picks for Simple Short Christian Book Reviews! I stayed up way too late reading this month so I know you are going to love these books!
I write and review books from a Christian Worldview. Reading books that will encourage and equip the lovely women who read, The Peaceful Haven. I also like to throw in a few surprises each month just to keep things interesting.
Simple Short Christian Book Reviews
FICTION
Chosen People was a page-turner, so much so that I could not wait to order the second book in the series Promised Land! I had to do a digital download through Amazon because I couldn’t wait for a book to be delivered and I never do that! If you are interested in modern-day Israel or the Middle East, you will love the dramatic and picturesque writing of Robert Whitlow
HOMEMAKING
This was my daily reading during tea time for a whole week! Home Made Lovely: Creating the Home You’ve Always Wanted is not only chocked full of home decor ideas but is also an immensely practical and well-written book. I enjoyed my time spent leafing through the beautiful photographs and took a few to try in my very own home!
COOKBOOK
Are you looking for hundreds of healthy and tasty meals to prepare for your family? Then The Complete Mediterranean Cookbook: 500 Vibrant, Kitchen-Tested Recipes for Living and Eating Well Every Day is the cookbook for you! Now, this is a cookbook to own!
HOMESCHOOL
How in the world did I miss reading these treasures!?! I have home-educated my children with the Charlotte Mason approach for 22 years and never read Karen Andreola’s books on Mother Culture, Nature Journaling, and the Glories of a Charlotte Mason Homeschool! Every page I read was a treasure that took me back to when my children were young. These books are inspirational and practical at the same time. I loved that Karen chose to write a fictional story about these important elements of homeschooling. It is a living book for sure. I highly recommend Pocketful Of Pinecones: Nature Study With The Gentle Art Of Learning: A Story For Mother Culture and Lessons at Blackberry Inn: Adventures with the Gentle Art of Learning to you!
CHILDREN
James Herriot’s Treasury for Children: Warm and Joyful Tales by the Author of All Creatures Great and Small is a must-have for the child or children in your life! I still catch my adult children pulling this book off the shelf to look at, as it brings back so many delightful childhood memories of us all reading together. Like it says in the title this book is a treasure!
GARDENING
In Bloom: Growing harvesting, and arranging flowers all year round is a lovely book! I enjoyed every moment of reading and gazing at the photographs. I gained fresh inspiration for my garden. Stay tuned for many photographs on the blog as I put what I learned from In Bloom, into action in my garden. I am also sure, all that time spent looking at flowers was good for my mental health this winter!
SPIRITUAL
The Beauty of an Uncluttered Soul: Allowing God’s Spirit to Transform You from the Inside Out is an absolute treasure! The topic of Scriptural soul care is a topic I am passionate about and I thought Carla Glasser presented this often misrepresented topic with superb Biblical knowledge! It is obvious from her written words that much prayer and listening went into the writing of this exceptional book! The illustrations are lovely and thoughtfully add to the reader’s journey. This interactive book can be used as a part of a daily quiet time with God or as a stand-alone to begin the guided process of searching one’s soul and Word for truth. Not many books get a 5 star from me but this lovely book does. I highly recommend this gem to you!
HANDMADE
Well, if you have been around The Peaceful Haven for any length of time, by now you know that I live in a 1903 farmhouse. With that knowledge, it isn’t hard to figure out why I love Simple Farmhouse Life: DIY Projects for the All-Natural, Handmade Home! There are so many easy and charming DIY projects you can do alone or with your children in this book. If you make just two crafts you will save enough money to cover the purchase price of this special book!
HISTORY
The Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz kept me up reading late into the night, with drooping eyelids I reluctantly set it aside to finish the next day! Simply put, I learned a lot. Erik Larson always makes history come alive!
BIBLE JOURNAL
All Things Are Possible: A Guided Journal for Christian Women with Inspiring Bible Verses and Creative Prompts I love this guided journal! I have been using it for a month and it has transformed my daily quiet time. The creative prompts cause me to pause and meditate on the scripture and ask God to show me what he wants me to learn from His Word. Each page has beautiful illustrations that aid the writing process, there is also plenty of room for wordy people like me to process feelings, truths, and deeper meanings.
