For me, Simple Short Christian Book Reviews allow me to find books that inspire! I want to be encouraged in all areas of my life so that, I can live a life that is pleasing to God. When we live our lives for Jesus Christ there is a depth to it not otherwise attainable. Life is flat… one-dimensional without things like worship, family, service, and love.
The Bible is the ultimate book that inspires me to live a life wholeheartedly following God. Other books (not to the extent of the Bible) can inspire and equip us to godly living too. Some reading months are lean and others are chocked full of delightful reading. This was one of those months.
Simple Short Christian Book Reviews
FAMILY
Everyone needs inspiration when raising a family for the glory of God. How about in your marriage? William Gouge has written a three-book series about what it takes to build a Godly Home and strengthen your marriage and faith. I am continually searching for meaningful wedding gifts. This is an encouraging and vision-building book series that will be my new “go-to” gift for young couples getting married. However, even if you have been married 27 years as I have you will still want to read this exceptional series.

SPIRITUAL
Answering Islam is the very best book to learn about the Muslim faith. To say I learned a lot from this book would be a giant understatement. As far as I am concerned, this book must be mandatory reading for every Christian in the 21st Century. We must understand Islam to confront and evangelize for the glory of God.
HOMEMAKING
A Well Kept Home is a charming book that is chocked full of homemaking wisdom from who else but the author’s grandmother. I have been a homemaker for 27 years now and suffice it to say, I learned a few things! I have implemented homemaking practices as recommended in A Well Kept Home. The pictures alone will inspire you to be an even better homemaker than you already are!
MOTHERHOOD
Oh, how I needed this book! Create Anyway: The Joy of Pursuing Creativity in the Margins of Motherhood is a permission slip to create every single day alongside your children. Pursue your God-given creative gifts alongside motherhood, for the enrichment of both experiences. What if you stopped viewing creativity as a selfish act, and started to see it as essential to your flourishing as a mother?
GARDEN
The Gardener’s Year is a gem! A new book is out from DK Publishing. The book is filled with lovely pictures and valuable information for even the most advanced gardener. I enjoyed The Gardener’s Year because it is so well laid out and user-friendly! Need inspiration for your garden? Get this thorough (317-page) book that will educate you on the art of gardening.
FICTION
I love historical fiction! If you have been reading my book reviews for any length of time you will know that I read and review quite a few historical fiction books every month. I am thrilled to announce that I have found a new author of excellence! She is pretty new on the scene with her second book in the Pathfinders Series, A Flight of Arrows published this month. I am pleased to recommend Lori Benton! What makes GREAT historical fiction?
First, is to have the period well researched. It has been a long while since I have read books that have been so completely immersed in history. The other equally important element in GREAT historical fiction is to have a gripping story that is written with the flow and can melt together the history and the story seamlessly. Without a doubt, Lori does this in all of her inspired writing! Now, onto what makes Christian Historical Fiction GREAT? Adding the third spiritual element as smoothly as the other elements of story and history are combined. There is only one thing left to say, I read all of Lori Benton’s books straight through the night in one sitting!
CRAFTS
For the Love of Hand Stitching is chocked full of inspiring embroidery projects you are going to enjoy making. I have long been a fan of Jan Constantine. She has always provided easy-to-make items for the home that have captured me! I have made many gifts for others from her example. Currently, I am embroidering a lavender sachet from another one of her charming books Heirloom Embroidery. All I have to say is, enjoy!
FINANCE
The Total Money Makeover is now a classic. This is not the first time (or even the second) you have seen a Dave Ramsey book that made the list for The Peaceful Haven’s monthly book review. Very few books are must-reads but this one is. You need to read The Total Money Makeover and so should your kids and their kids and so on. Being a non-budget kinda gal, Dave has been able to explain things to me that many Christian Financial Ministries have not.
COOKBOOK
Paleo Cooking from Elana’s Pantry: Gluten-Free, Grain-Free, Dairy-Free Recipes Honestly, paleo cooking doesn’t always taste great. How’s that for a confession? Some disgusting substitutions have been tried in the name of Paleo. No worries here…only delicious food! My whole family simply loved every recipe we tried from Elana’s Pantry and I am sure you will too!
HOMESCHOOL
102 Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum is another excellent book by Cathy Duffy. Cathy knows her stuff and you will be grateful she does. Even if you have your curriculum all picked out or you aren’t even a homeschooler, this book will help you evaluate supplemental educational materials you will want to add to whatever style of education your child is participating in. This is a truly “educational” book!
CHILDREN
Robert McCloskey’s books are some of my favorites! I was read these books by my Mom and I read each of these idyllically funny books to each one of my children when they were little ones. Anxiously awaiting the day that I will be able to read these classics to my grandchildren. Now, how is that for an endorsement?
HOME DECOR
Williamsburg Decorating with Style surprised me! This book is a publication of the Williamsburg Foundation which has published many educational and inspiring books. I don’t know how I could have missed this gem. First published in 1998, Williamsburg Decorating with Style is a lesson in historical home decor, of equal importance is how we can apply these strikingly simple elements in our own home. Grab a cup of coffee, browse the books striking photographs first, and then read every single word.
