There must be a theme to this edition of Simple Short Christian Book Reviews. The word “shoestring” turned up in the title of three books that made the list this month. Saving money must be on my mind. I had such a wonderful time reading and reviewing this month and I found some ingenious, creative titles that I am confident you and your family will truly enjoy!
All book reviews are written from a Christian Worldview. However, not all books on the list are written by Christian authors or published by Christian publishers. Wishing you many enjoyable hours reading!
Simple Short Christian Book Reviews
FICTION
The Centurion’s Wife is a departure from the traditional Janette Oke books of which I am a huge fan! The Centurion’s Wife is a well-written tale of salvation. Set in the Roman Empire, you will learn about that pivotal period and at the same time encourage your faith. It would also make a wonderful read-aloud for the whole family.
CHILDREN
If I Could Keep You Little was recommended by my Mom who actually came over to read the story to my 26 -15-year-old children. Don’t worry, I took lots of pictures! You are going to love this book and so are your children, no matter what their ages.
Mei Fuh Memories From China is written by the incredible woman of faith, Edith Schaeffer about her growing up years in China as the daughter of missionaries. This is a charming true story that will enable you and your children to learn about another culture. What I love about Mei Fuh Memories From China is that after reading a chapter you are so curious about what you read that you and your children will end up researching things like silkworms and Mulberry trees just to name a few. As a result of this book, we planted a Mulberry tree.
FINANCIAL
Living Well On A Shoestring is an older book that is still relevant today. What makes this book so special? Well, I was able to stick a few new ideas in my money-saving toolbelt and that is saying something. I read and review many frugal lifestyle books and most just give the same advice and I do all those things they suggest. I want to learn new ways to save money and I did when reading this excellent book!
HOMESCHOOL
A Thomas Jefferson Education, although a hair away from being written from a Christian Worldview. This book is not just for homeschoolers. It is for every parent, no matter what style of education your child attends. Are your kids in college? Then this book is for you. Are your kids in public school, homeschool, or private school? Then this book is for you. This book was recommended by a friend, thanks, Darlene! The reason this book is so special is that it inspires you as a parent or teacher to take a critical look at what education is and isn’t and how you can become a better teacher! Get this book today!
DEVOTIONAL
On This Day In Christian History is an inspiring family devotional for school-aged children. You will be inspired by the lives of Christian men and women throughout history who lived out their faith in such a way as to glorify God. You don’t want to miss this day-by-day devotional!
HOME DECOR
Shoestring Chic by the editors of Country Living will be sure to give you tons of ideas on how to make your home charming, beautiful, comfortable, and of equal importance done frugally. When decorating my home part of the joy definitely comes from getting something for FREE or inexpensively. This book helped me to problem-solve certain areas of my home creatively and frugally!
PARENTING
101 Things You Should Do With Your Kids Before They Leave Home was a tremendous encouragement to both my husband and I. We are nearing the end of active parenting as our youngest is 15. We were delighted to find that we had done most of the things suggested in this book and we added a few more ideas to our parenting bucket list. No matter what the age of your children or grandchildren you will want to take a look at this easy-to-read book.
GARDENING
Gardening On A Shoestring is filled with creative ideas to have a beautiful garden on a shoestring. I have already done two of the projects in this book and I was enamored with all of the ideas presented by Alex Mitchell. No matter where you live, what zone you are in, and even if you have a brown thumb you will be encouraged to try one of these simple garden projects.
HISTORY
Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania is a history book that reads like a novel. I could barely put this book down! I am admittedly a history buff but I feel certain that most people would be riveted by the details of the gripping story of the Lusitania and those individual lives that were impacted by its sinking.
HEALTH
Prevention Is The Cure For Cancer is written by my very own doctor Trudy Pieper. She is an amazing woman of God, a wife, a mother of three adult children with special needs, and a grandmother! This book is written in simple layman fashion, anyone looking to live a life that glorifies God will want to read this book. By the time patients make it to Dr. Trudy, she is their last hope and she has an incredible track record of healing! Why? She prays for every patient she sees and relies on the Word of God. She is a wealth of knowledge!
