As you know I am passionate about practicing Christ-Centered Slow Living. It is a beautiful and fulfilling way to live. The practice of hygge is perfectly suited to slow living…like a hand-made glove fits the hand it was made for. Although I am not Danish, I am Swedish so I have actually experienced Hygge my whole life. I am excited to share with you my Spring Hygge Essentials For Your Home!
The Danish word for Spring hygge is “Forårshygge”. Loosely translated it means living a meaningful life of art. That idea, in my mind, means focusing on prayer, meditation, and the Bible first so that we approach every idea or philosophy from a Christian Worldview. Does the idea of hygge check out?
Approaching God, our Father in Heaven, as the great creator of beauty, peace, and love we can see a connection. Hygge is a practical way to slow down and experience God’s presence in our lives. As children of our Father, we can pursue the beauty of His creation, rest, and prayer. He is the great creator and we, want to be like Him!
Spring Hygge Essentials For Your Home
FRESH FLOWERS
Adding the beauty of God’s creation, especially flowers changes one’s mood. A bouquet of fresh flowers is an easy way to add nature to your home. Even better if you have a family garden and can grow fresh flowers in your yard!
PRAYER
Prayer and meditation are the keys to Christ-Centered Slow Living. Spending time with Jesus brings perspective and wisdom and quite frankly, it’s the only way to bring honest peace into your home!
CANDLES
Candles just make me think about Christ, He is the light of the world. Candles are and have always been a way to bring beauty into your home. It ushers in a feeling of rest and reflection. Healthy essential oil candles have the ability to change the atmosphere of your home depending on the scent! Here is a hint, try a lavender-infused candle to get the kids to relax before bedtime! Works like a charm every time!
FRONT PORCH
It’s OK if you don’t have a front porch, but creating an outdoor family space (if possible waterproof) certainly adds to the quality of life! Front porches can be utterly charming, allow for fellowship, and encourages neighborhood community. It’s my favorite place to write, pray, and eat a simple lunch!
WATCH THE SUNSET
Make this a daily ritual, it is an opportunity to pause and thank God for this beautiful experience as a family!
OUTDOOR MEALS
When the weather warms, make sure to eat at least one meal a day outside if the weather permits. This activity encourages family conversation and there always seem to be fun childhood antics that come from eating al fresco!
FAIRY LIGHTS
If you want to spend your evenings outside, these are a charming addition to your home. Lay a picnic blanket on the ground, and play a board game together. Read a bedtime story outside and it makes the activity extra special and exciting! Fairy lights add ambiance to everything…
FARMERS MARKET
I only have to walk about a mile up the street to my local farmer’s market. It is one of the highlights of my week. Grab a market basket or homemade market bag and enjoy the slow moments with your family or alone.
SWITCH OUT WINTER CURTAINS AND BEDLINENS
It’s always nice to switch things up a bit in the home decor department. Put away heavy curtains and bedlinens and replace them with lighter-weight and colored versions. Shop the thrift store for the very best value! My home is completely thrifted which is, by the way, a very hygge thing to do.
BACKYARD FIREPIT
This is a very easy thing to build yourself. Dig a pit, surround it with rocks. Follow fire safety. Keep the flames low. You are all set for a peaceful activity that you can enjoy alone or with your family!
FORAGE
Honestly, I used to be petrified of foraging on my own and especially with my children. Now that I have educated myself, it has become a delightful family activity. Our favorite is to forage wild Black Raspberries which grow prolifically here in Ohio. Also, Morel Mushrooms and wild Purslane! I suggest taking a class from your local rec center to learn how to properly identify plants and stay safe.
SUNDAY DRIVE & PICNIC
Pack a picnic and head out directly after church for a delightful day of exploring. It can be as easy as a jar of peanut butter, honey, jam, bread, and fruit. You will be utterly delighted by this practice!
READ
A hammock in the shade of a large tree is one of the best places to read in the Spring. Slow down and hygge on!
SPRING CLEAN
Give your home a good spring clean and make sure to get everyone involved. Many hands make light work! Once this deep clean has been performed you might also want to organize your home too! Getting rid of the clutter can be thrilling and refreshing!
NATURE WALKS
This has been a family activity of ours since our six children were infants. Why not bring a nature journal to draw something special that catches your eye. You do not need to be a good artist, just enjoy the process.
FRUIT COBBLER
Nothing says Spring like the very first homemade cobbler, you can check out my recipe HERE!
Happy Spring!
Blessings,
Splendid job!
