It’s Time to Save Money With These Easy Stain Removal Basics.   How to get a stain out of anything?

Now that is a laundry question that has plagued homemakers across the centuries and has kept us busy scrubbing clothing, bed sheets, and table linens.  Sometimes, without much success.   We currently have access to modern-day chemicals that are supposed to help with stain removal.  I have used plenty over the past 27 years as a homemaker and I have had varying success.

What is a woman to do?

Go back to the basics.

BLOOD:  Soak the fabric in soapy water for half an hour.  Apply lemon juice and gently scrub.

RUST:  Use the stem of a rhubarb and gently rub the stem on the rust stain. (This is my favorite remedy, the only problem is that you have to wait until rhubarb is in season!)

WAX:  Put ice on the wax and use a butter knife to scrape off the wax.  Once removed work in mineral spirits and wash.

GRASS: Soak the grass stain in soapy water.  After the soak use rubbing alcohol and gently scrub the color.  Rinse and repeat.

FRUIT JUICE:  Rinse with water and then add white vinegar and scrub gently.  Continue to rinse with water after each vinegar application.

MUD:  Let the mud dry and scrape off the mud with a fork.  Soak and wash.

RED WINE:  Sprinkle the spill immediately with table salt.  Rinse with mineral spirits and wash immediately.

HELPFUL HINTS

  • I find that most stains can be easily removed just by soaking them in laundry detergent in the washing machine for a half hour before running the machine.
  • Another tip is to use an old (clean) toothbrush to scrub your stain out.  The bristles are gentle and work well.
  • I have just recently started using lemon essential oil to remove stains and have had great success!

Happy scrubbing everyone!
