For me, The Summer Garden “TO DO” List is the hardest to get done and the least pleasurable because of the heat of Summer in the midwest. However, I still enjoy it. This list is a simplified list of essentials.
In any season there are certain things that must get done in a timely manner. Working in God’s green creation is always a lovely experience even if it is hot! A tip though, please stay hydrated and always garden with a water bottle right by your side. An added benefit to gardening is the exercise you get from doing it. However, remember that dehydration can be a real danger, especially in the summer months.
SUMMER GARDENING “TO DO” LIST
-
- Weed, weed, and more weeding.
- Apply composted manure on heavy-feeding plants like delphiniums and roses.
- Water every other day.
- Prune spring-flowering shrubs when they are finished blooming.
- Cut back perennial flowers to the ground after their first bloom so they can flower again.
- Deadhead all flowers. I usually do this weekly, even better daily.
- Check plants for invasive insects, especially vegetables.
- Stake any tall perennial plants like delphinium, dahlias, and mallows.
- Harvest vegetables daily.
- Harvest and dry herbs.
- Plant Fall crops like spinach, mache, and kale.
- Watch for and treat blackspot and powdery mildew on roses.
- Keep fertilizing your annuals and perennials with compost tea or diluted Fish Emulsion.
- Keep your birdbaths filled.
- Tie climbing roses.
My wish for you is that you enjoy the Summer in your garden. Eat outside on cooler evenings. Have breakfast on your back porch or deck. Watch the kids play in the shade of your yard and have fun laughing at their antics. Take walks and visit other local gardens. Breathe deeply in the beautiful Summer fragrances of flowers in bloom and enjoy the produce from your yard.
