Remember when there used to be books published full of inspirational stories, poems, paintings, and Bible Verses on a specific topic? Like James Herriot’s Treasury for Children or a vintage copy of A Treasury of Christmas Stories and Songs! Today, I thought we could all use some encouragement in our roles as mothers. I have created The Mother’s Treasury, in which I will share a few poems and verses about the high calling of motherhood!
Living in a world that does not value motherhood or children can be discouraging. As a mom of six children, I have heard my fair share of disparaging responses even within the church. The one-liner zings and jokes can be hard to bear. What a refreshing breath of fresh air to read and meditate on God’s Word which affirms motherhood, and the value of children, and women!
It is my hope, that you will be able to drown out the worldly voices and soak in the goodness of these encouraging words and art!
The Mother’s Treasury
“Oh that God would give every mother a vision of the glory and splendor of the work that is given to her when a babe is placed in her bosom to be nursed and trained! Could she have but one glimpse into the future of that life as it reaches on into eternity; could she look into its soul to see its possibilities; could she be made to understand her own personal responsibility for the training of this child, for the development of its life, and for its destiny,–she would see that in all God’s world there is no other work so noble and so worthy of her best powers, and she would commit to no others hands the sacred and holy trust given to her.”

Human beings look separate because you see them walking about separately. But then we are so made that we can see only the present moment. If we could see the past, then of course it would look different. For there was a time when every man was part of his mother, and (earlier still) part of his father as well, and when they were part of his grandparents. If you could see humanity spread out in time, as God sees it, it would look like one single growing thing–rather like a very complicated tree. Every individual would appear connected with every other.
Tribute to Mother
A picture memory brings to me;
I look across the years and see
Myself beside my mother’s knee.
I feel her gentle hand restrain
My selfish moods, and know again
A child’s blind sense of wrong and pain.
But wiser now,
a man gray grown,
My childhood’s needs are better known.
My mother’s chastening love I own.
Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.
Psalm 127:3
But Jesus called them to him, saying, “Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God.
Luke 18:16
God sends children for another purpose
than merely to keep up the race – to enlarge our hearts;
to make us unselfish and full of kindly sympathies and affections;
to give our souls higher aims and to call out all our faculties;
to extend enterprise and exertion….
My soul blesses the great Father every day that He
has gladdened the earth with little children.
Mary Hewitt
“The clocks were striking midnight and the rooms were very still as a figure glided quietly from bed to bed, smoothing a coverlid here, settling a pillow there, and pausing to look long and tenderly at each unconscious face, to kiss each with lips that mutely blessed, and to pray the fervent prayers which only mothers utter.”
Louisa May Alcott
“The woman who makes a sweet, beautiful home, filling it with love and prayer and purity, is doing something better than anything else her hands could find to do beneath the skies.”
“He didn’t realize that love as powerful as your mother’s for you leaves its own mark.”
J. K. Rowling
Unless the Lord builds the house,
those who build it labor in vain.
Unless the Lord watches over the city,
the watchman stays awake in vain.
It is in vain that you rise up early
and go late to rest,
eating the bread of anxious toil;
for he gives to his beloved sleep.
Psalm 127:1-2
The loveliest masterpiece of the heart of God is the heart of a mother.
Therese of Lisieux
Mothers of young children, your work is most holy. You are fashioning the destinies of immortal souls. The powers folded up in the little ones that you hushed to sleep in your bosoms last night, are powers that shall exist forever. You are preparing them for their immortal destiny and influence. Be faithful. Take up your sacred burden reverently.
J. R. Miller
My prayer is that this miniature Treasury
will encourage, equip, and cast a vision
for you in your beautiful role of mother!
YOUR TURN…
What is your biggest struggle in motherhood?
Prayerfully Yours,
Janelle
