It’s no secret I love to garden and it’s also no secret that I hate to exercise. I understand that hate is a strong word. I still feel it’s appropriate to use as I personally reference my relationship to exercise. I for one have never felt an endorphin in my life, well, except when I’m in the garden. I have found out why gardening is the ultimate mind, body, spirit workout!
It turns out that what Frances Hodgson Burnett said in The Secret Garden is true. “She made herself stronger by fighting with the wind.” Check out these amazing facts about how gardening can transform your health.
Gardening Is The Ultimate Mind Body Spirit Workout
- The Centers for Disease Control have found that gardening is considered moderate cardiovascular exercise. Gardening 30 to 45 minutes a day can burn 150 to 300 calories.
- Studies have found that the mental health benefits of gardening are extensive. Not only can regular gardening reduce mental health problems like depression and anxiety, but it can also reduce stress and combat high blood pressure, as well as improving overall physical fitness
- The sensory experience of gardening allows individuals to connect with God in a healthy worshipful way, We do not worship his creation but rather the great creator, God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit.
- A recent study in the Netherlands suggests that gardening can fight stress even better than other relaxing leisure activities.
- A 2006 study found that gardening reduced the incidence of dementia by 36 percent. Researchers tracked more than 2,800 people over the age of 60 for 16 years and concluded that physical activity, particularly gardening, could reduce the incidence of dementia in future years.
- Gardening also benefits your health when you choose to grow and eat your own food. When the family grows their own herbs, fruits, and vegetables, you have control over growing practices, whereas, commercially grown produce may have been treated with unsafe pesticides and fertilizers.
That is some compelling evidence to help you see the value of gardening in terms of the benefits to your mind, body, and spirit
