I don’t know about you but some of the “How to Winterize Your Home” idealists will cost you a fortune!  Now, if you have a fortune then go ahead.  I do not have the luxury of an endless budget to work with.  My guess is that you don’t either.  So here is the challenge…How to Winterize Your Home on a Budget?

I have researched some wonderful alternatives to the pricey options.  These creative substitutes will still be effective and save you a boatload of money in the process.

Winterize Your Home On A Budget

  1. Clean your gutters.
  2. Plant evergreen shrubs next to your home to serve as insulation.  Also, if you live on acreage think about planting a windbreak.
  3. Flush your hot water system.
  4. Clean off any debris from the roof and secure any loose shingles.
  5. Turn your ceiling fans so that they spin clockwise.
  6. Replace all the filters in your home.
  7. Use heavyweight curtains for the winter months.
  8. If you don’t have new windows in your home you can install Heat Control Window Film or the traditional plastic.
  9. Sew your own draft guards or roll up a long towel and put them at the base of every outdoor entryway to your home.
  10. Use weather-stripping.
  11. Make sure your house is insulated.
  12. Calk the outside and inside of your home.  Plug up those cracks.
  13. Surround the base of your home with straw bales (My neighbor gave me this idea)  His family has done this on their farmhouse for years!
  14. Insulate your pipes.
  15. Have your furnace cleaned this year.
  16. Clean your fireplace and close the flue.
  17. Remove window air conditioning units and fans.
  18. Shut off rooms and the vents in the rooms you do not use.
  19. Use a  Hot Water Heater Blanket.
  20. Drain and put away your garden hoses.
  21. Seal your ductwork in your home.
  22. Schedule your thermostat and put on a sweater and slippers to keep you warm.
  23. Check your home for mold and dirt build-up…especially in ductwork and in basements.
  24. Check your window wells for leaks and remove debris.
  25. If you have a wood-burning fireplace or wood stove make sure you have a good wood supply.
  26. Check your electrical outlets and switches for drafts and insulate properly with Wall Plate Insulation Gaskets.
  27. Make sure you have a winter survival kit that includes a flashlight, batteries, matches, non-electric radio, and enough food and water for seven days.

Most of these suggestions will not cost you a dime to implement.  I hope you have found some cost-effective ideas that will help you to Winterize your Home on a Budget!
