Worship Is A Lifestyle. When you think of the word worship, what comes to mind?
For me, my mind conjures up images of a simple cross at the forefront of an old church, pews that smell like lemon oil, and stained glass windows. Congregations bowing their heads in reverence, praying, and singing meaningful songs to God.
In reality, worship is a matter of the heart and can be practiced anywhere! Wholehearted worship is a lifestyle. Worship is having faith in God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and offering Him the grateful homage, submission, and honor He deserves. Yes, it most definitely happens in a corporate worship service but it is also just as likely to happen while picking apples with your children.
God is spirit,
and those who worship him
must worship in
spirit and truth.
John 4:24
I find that the key to a worshipful heart is to slow down so that I am able to actively engage in my surroundings. If I am too busy to notice a butterfly, read my Bible, or survey the details of a flower then worship as a lifestyle, outside of a church building is going to be hard to accomplish.
As Christians, worship needs to become our normal mode of living. In our culture, it is very, very hard to accomplish. We are so busy doing, that we forfeit worship as a viable spiritual discipline. I am so thankful that God is so very patient with us while we are learning how to worship Him. I recommend starting out your day with one or two minutes of silence and then heading on to reading God’s Word and prayer. It will renew your heart and mind and help you to walk through a slow or hectic day with a worshipful heart.
And the people believed; and when they heard
that the Lord had visited the people of Israel
and that he had seen their affliction,
they bowed their heads and worshiped.
Exodus 4:31
All hearts are made to worship. If the heart is not worshiping God, then it will be drawn to worship something else. It is therefore critical that we, as believers, dedicate intentional time to learning how to worship Jesus in spirit and in truth.
Here’s a tip I have gleaned over the years. Practicing thankfulness makes it easier for our hearts to enter into worship. As Psalm 100:4 states, “Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name!” An added benefit is that thankfulness can erase anxiety!
Worship Is A Lifestyle
- Trust God in an area of fear.
- Journal about the wonders of God.
- Take a walk and worship God through His creation (this is very different from worshiping creation).
- Pray The Hours
- Surrender an area of your life that you have kept to yourself, over to Jesus.
- Offer up a chore you hate doing as an act of worship.
- Pick a bouquet of flowers for your neighbor offering a simple act of love.
- Engage in a creative endeavor that you love and that makes you feel fully alive!
- Worship is an important component of Christ-Centered Slow Living and is a Spiritual Discipline too!
I leave you with this thought from Richard Foster…“Just as worship begins in holy expectancy, it ends in holy obedience. If worship does not propel us into greater obedience, it has not been worship.”
